Waking up this morning, as cliché as it sounds, I had a feeling something was about to change. Dragging my drowsy butt out of bed I glanced outside of my window looking out into the hills of the Kanto Region. The sun just peaked out behind the distant mountains lighting the valley in a bright morning yellow. I opened my window to let some air circulate through my stuffy room. I walked over to the bathroom brushing my light blonde hair, and washing my light peach colored face. I looked in the mirror for awhile scrutinizing everything about my face, the color of my eyes, if my skin was clear, my breath, etc. It was the beginning of June, and my last day as a second year student at Kanto High. Although most of the students slack off with their appearance on the last day of school, for me it was the complete opposite. I quickly changed into my tank top and shorts that I laid out on the bed the night before.
"Hmm, it looks like it's going to be nice today." I thought aloud slipping my black shoes on. I grabbed my black knapsack and headed downstairs. Suddenly I smelled a delicious scent wafting its way up the stairs from the kitchen, I walked further down and I saw mom making her famous 'last-day-breakfast'. Without turning around to look at me she greeted me,
"Good morning Christina dear."
"Mornin' mom." I replied taking my final steps down into the kitchen. I didn't know for sure how she knew when and where I would be in the house. I suppose one could call it a mother's intuition…that or my whereabouts were blatantly obvious. I watched her finish making breakfast letting my eyes wander from her to all around the kitchen.
"Now that I think about it the kitchen is pretty simple." I thought vaguely. We had your average microwave, stove, and refrigerator. The cabinets were a very pretty oak wood, and the floor had old-school giant white tile squares. The walls in the kitchen were painted an olive green, mom's favorite color. She set my breakfast down on the table, and without thinking about the temperature of the food, I dug in. It was friggin hot but it was definitely not disgusting. She smiled sitting down across from me resting her head on her right hand. I looked up from my empty plate with one last bite about to be shoved into my mouth,
"What?" I asked looking at her. She sighed and shrugged,
"It's nothing, you just remind me of myself when I was your age." I nearly choked on my last bite. Gulping down my milk I rolled my eyes,
"Mom, not today please? Save the nostalgic speech for when I get home 'kay?" I winked at her, she smiled and nodded. Just then there was an obnoxious banging on the front door,
"Christina! Hurry up! We're gonna be late!" My eyes flickered to the clock, it was 7:35 a.m.
"Crap!! I'm coming!" I shouted back grabbing my stuff and kissing my mom on the head,
"Bye mom!" I called out slamming the front door. My best friend Amber was waiting in the front with her bike,
"Jeez sleep-in much?" she asked me teasingly mounting herself on the bike. Amber was my age, 16 going on 17, a second year, had hazel eyes and short-straightened maroon red hair, wore square framed glasses, a casual flowing punk striped blouse, black shorts, and converse shoes. She had her little Squirtle pop out of the backpack waving its tiny hands at me,
"Squirtle Squirtle!" it grinned saying 'good morning' to me. I laughed a little shaking my head,
"You brought Squirtle with you?" I asked. She shrugged grinning,
"Well duh! Besides it's the last day! No one's going to care! Everyone's gonna bring their pokemon to school! Uh…" I felt a dark cloud envelope my entire body as I hunched over with my head down…maybe this is what a Gloom Pokemon feels like all day,
"Eh heh heh, sorry Chrissy I keep forgetting you've never owned a Pokemon." She and grinned nervously scratching the back of her head with Squirtle mimicking her. I shook it off and forced a smile,
"It's no biggie." I lied.
"I still don't understand why your mom won't allow you to keep a Pokemon." She asked me.
"It's because she deals with them every day. Pokemon fall into her 'work' category. When she comes home she doesn't want to see work come home with her. That and we've just never found the time." I shrugged. Mom is one of the head Nurses at the Kanto Region's Pokemon Day Care Center. She does an amazing job and everyone in Kanto trusts her. She loves Pokemon very much otherwise she would've never had taken the job. I remember coming to work with her when I was a kid, watching her handle the customers hand in their Pokeballs and their eggs while they went off to who-knows-where. Some of the owners never came back and she'd have to put the abandoned Pokemon up for adoption. I've asked if I could keep some of the Pokemon that were put up for adoption many times, but the answer was always no. But not only was that a problem, my main issue now is I have no idea what kind of Pokemon I want. There are so many of them here! Even if mom did decide to changed her mind one day, I didn't know which type fit me best. All I knew is if I was going to get a Pokemon, I would want one that I can connect with. Like how Amber connects with Squirtle, they can just look at each other and know what to do. I walked up to Squirtle and rubbed its smooth little head,
"Squirtle!" It smiled. Amber turned her head to look at me,
"So come on tell me! Did you have a party last night or something? You look exhausted."
"No," I replied rolling my eyes getting my helmet on my head,
"My neighbors were up all night fretting over their prized Arcanine's egg." I stated coyly mounting myself on my bike. I started pedaling ahead with Amber right on my tail,
"Why are they worried about that?" she asked me riding neck-and-neck to my left side,
"Apparently they have some coordinator's contest in Johto, and they don't know whether to bring Arcanine and the egg or skip the contest and stay 'til the egg hatches." She looked at me surprised,
"Oh wow…that sucks." I nodded my head turning left on the next road.
"Yeah pretty much. They've called all of their friends they've met over the years asking if they could watch over the egg. But apparently they too are caught up in their own contests." All of us were pretty quiet for a long time not knowing what to do or to say about this. Turning right on the next street I saw Squirtle lean in to Amber's back whispering in her ear. She then turned to me with that 'bright-idea-beaming-smile' she had,
"Hey Squirtle just had a great idea. Why don't you tell them about the daycare center! They can leave the egg there while they go off into Johto and come back for it when they're done with the contest!"
"Hey! That's not a bad idea! I'll talk to them about it when school's over. But right now let's just get there so we're not labeled 'tardy' on the last day." Amber and Squirtle nodded,
"Yeah the last thing we need is Principal Surge giving us a lecture starting off with," she lowered her voice into a deep and stoic tone,
"When I was in the army' blah blah blah."
"Amen to that!" I cried out giving her a thumbs-up. Taking one more left we turned onto a street with humongous full trees aligning the dirt road in perfect symmetry. It was fun looking at the ground's alternation between shadow lines and sun lines. It reminded me of the pattern on Beedrill's abdomen. Pulling into the lot Amber and I were astounded at what we saw. It was amazing! The school had its own little Pokemon themed Carnival in the back field! There was a Garados rollercoaster, a Jiggly Puff bounce house, and so much more!
"Holy toldeo!" I cried out happily. Amber and I glanced at each other and grinned,
"I called the Blue Bulbasaur bumper car!" Amber called out running ahead.
"Oh no you don't!" I cried back running with her. Today was truly amazing. While Amber and I were testing our luck with the prize booths, Principal Surge took control of the intercom calling out in his old Lieutenant's tone,
"Ten Hut! Alright you kids! Good work! You all really electrified this year! I congratulate all of those who are moving on, and for those who will return next year. So without further ado, let's call out the last five seconds of the school!" All of us froze looking at the huge outdoor clock,
"5! 4! 3! 2! 1!" BUZZZZZ!!!! The bell rang, and everyone screamed in joy. Amber and I waited until the crowd had gone before we left the campus. She and I were able to grab our electronic year books yesterday so all day today we could exchange recordings of H.A.G.S. and the like. Flipping though my yearbook I had gotten so many signatures, I thought I was going to needed a new memory card just to have more room for people to sign. I felt pretty satisfied with the number of signatures I had received and decided I put the electronic yearbook back in my knapsack,
"Aren't you listen to what everyone said?" Amber asked me showing Squirtle the messages people left in her yearbook,
"No way! It's much more fun to listen when you get home! That way it's much more meaningful!" I smiled zipping up my knapsack. It was 12:30 and pretty much everyone at the school had dispersed off the campus. A few of my other friends were chilling out in the front of the school with their Pokemon running around on the grass. Squirtle excited to see them leaped out of Amber's arms and ran to greet the other Pokemon,
"Hey Christina! Hey Amber!" Kyle called out. I waved back at the short blondie,
"Hey Kyle! What's going on?"
"I was just telling the others that I'm having an out-of-school pool party at my place. Pokemon included." He grinned. I could see Amber glance at me for a sec to see if I was okay, I let the side of my mouth that she could see turn into a smirk.
"Oh yeah? What time is the party?" I asked Kyle,
"It starts when we all get there. Whaddaya say? You guys wanna come?" He asked us petting his Charmelion. Before I could say anything I felt a long buzzing from my phone in my pocket. I looked down at it wondering who was calling me right now…it was mom,
"Hey Christina, sweetie. I need you to come home right away."
"Mom are you okay?" I asked worriedly,
"I'm fine, but I need help at the Daycare center." My eyes widened in shock.
"What?! Seriously? Of all the rotten luck!" I grumbled in my head my face turned into a sour expression, the timing on this really sucked. Why does she need me? Doesn't she have enough help at the center as it is?
"You okay Tina?" Amber asked me. I looked up at her and nodded my head.
"It's my mom, um guys gimmie a sec!" I asked turning around and walking in the opposite direction. I stopped by a tree that had a trunk thick enough to hide a full grown Blastoise. I turned my head in all directions checking to make sure no one followed me,
"Mom what's going on?"
"My best egg watcher has caught the stomach-flu and I can't find a replacement. Not to mention Nurse Joy is out of town for the week. A couple brought a brand new egg over and I need your help to watch over it." An egg? I wondered if the egg belonged to the couple that lived next door, but that didn't matter to me at the moment. I was invited to my first out-of-school pool party and the fact that I had to baby sit an egg completely ruined the out-of-school fun vibe.
"But mom! I told you I was gonna hang with the guys today!" I cried out,
"Nice try, you didn't tell me anything about that when you left this morning." She concurred. Huh? I could've sworn I told her! I quickly re-played my chat with mom before I left and smacked myself with a face-palm. She was right,
"Even if I didn't say so, it's pretty obvious that I would want to!" I thought dumbfounded and annoyed,
"I'm sorry Christie but this is more important than hanging with your friends at some kid's pool." I blinked rapidly holding the phone at arm's length staring straight at the phone,
"How did she?" I asked in a small voice,
"I'm your mother I know everything." Hearing that sent bolts of electricity through my nerves. I sighed in defeat and nodded,
"Fine."
"Thank you sweetheart! I'll pick you up in a few." I closed up my phone and walked over to my bike. Amber saw me and came up to me,
"You okay?" I nodded and kept staring at my bike lock toying with the dials 'til I got the combination right,
"I'll live. I've been summoned to babysit an egg." I mumbled finally getting the darned thing unlocked. Within minutes mom's car pulled in, I tossed my bike in the back and waved 'good-bye' to the gang,
"I'll call you tonight!" Amber cried out waving, I cupped my hand by my mouth and called out,
"Talk to you then!" The entire car ride was silent. I kept glancing back at mom's face and I could tell she was in 'work-mode'.  Even so I didn't exactly feel like talking to her. In less than ten minutes we pulled up to the daycare center and parked in mom's designated spot. I got out of the car nearly slamming the door in anger. The both of us walked inside silent, and our expressions stoic as steel. I walked inside the egg room and began searching for the egg. Aisles and aisles of Pokemon eggs lined the room; it was like Easter on steroids. I could see a few Squirtle eggs, as well as some vulpix eggs,
"Hmm…I wonder…." I began searching for a Growlithe patterned egg, left and right, up and down, rapidly scanning the aisles for an orange, white, and black striped egg….no dice,
"Man…maybe it wasn't them after all…" I sighed plopping on the cold tile floor leaning my back against an opening in the wall. Bored to death I pulled out my electronic yearbook, thinking maybe this would cheer me up.
"Hey Christina! What a crazy year huh? Coordination 101 seemed like it was ages ago! Hope to see you in the summer"
"Hey Chrissy, thanks for being an amazing friend…" After listening to all of my signatures in my yearbook, I closed my eyes smiling and reminiscing the past year. I could barely hear mom talking to some customers in the front desk, the only sound I could hear was the humming of the Poke egg heaters. It was a mind-numbing yet soothing sound. I could feel my eyes get heavier and heavier, the next thing I knew the room was pitch black. It had gotten later in the evening and I was still stuck inside the Egg room. I got up from my little corner and found a text from mom glowing on my phone,
"Off to recruit an injured Pokemon, will be back in 20 min." Snapping my phone shut I began walking back to the front desk. Opening the door I peeked left and right to see if there was anyone else here,
"Wow…not a soul…talk about night shift…" I joked a little closing the door behind me and pulling up a seat. The center was completely empty, nothing but the sounds of sleeping Pokemon and the ticking clock echoed in the halls.
"I could be at Kyle's house, kicking it with my friends, splashing around in a pool, eating junk food, watching movies, and blasting music…but no!" I exaggerated dropping my head on the desk,
"I'm stuck here babysitting eggs that prolly won't hatch for another week…" Just then out of the corner of my eye, I saw a glowing light coming from the Egg room. Cautiously I walked over to the door and put my ear to it,
"Dude! Check this out! It's a Pokemon Goldmine!" said one voice from inside,
"Haha cha no kidding! Let's get this one out of here quick before someone sees!" What the heck?! No! The eggs!
"Right! Heh, good thinking with that phone call Kyle!"  What? Kyle? What's Kyle doing here?
"Haha I know, heh best part is by the time that stupid nurse figures out she was tricked it'll be too late!" I could feel my anger rising, so that's what that party was for! To get me outta the way so they could get rid of my mom!
"That's it!" I growled under my breath. Busting through the door I flicked on the light,
"END OF THE LINE! PUT THE EGGS DOWN!" I screamed, all three boys turned their heads jaw-slacked,
"Dude! What's she doing here?!" A boy with short brown hair cried out to Kyle. Kyle stared at me awestricken,
"How was I—I mean she—what the hell is going on?! Come on guys let's bail!" He exclaimed bolting for the exit. Using quick thinking I slammed my hand on the "emergency-lockdown button" that was set to the right of the door, immediately setting off the alarm making the rooms flash a bright red. Simultaneously all of the doors bolted down trapping all of us inside the egg room,
"We're trapped!" The boy with long black hair cried out banging on the steel doors. Kyle turned around to me with a deadly look, it was clear that this complicated things for him and he didn't like it. The alarm system at the Kanto Daycare Center was one of the most high-tech systems set in the region. This button was never to be pushed unless it was an extreme emergency, well…sorry mom losing an egg to a bunch of punks sounds like a pretty big emergency to me.
"This is a pretty risky move…" I thought to myself pulling my hand away from the alarm.
"If things come down to a fight I'm at a slight disadvantage…however…" Through the flashing red light I could see Kyle signal the guys to drop their loot,
"Christina." He growled.
"Kyle…" I spat back. He took a few steps forward glaring at me,
"Unlock the doors now."
"Uh-oh…here comes the ultimatum…" I thought to myself. In my head I knew fighting these guys wouldn't be the best course of action, and in the end I'd be the one hurting and not them. But for some reason I couldn't shake this feeling, I had to save that egg at all costs! Plus I was still pissed at how low Kyle sunk to try and make his little robbery possible. I stiffened up and folded my arms smirking at him,
"And if I don't?" He grinned; the boys cracked their knuckles walking on each of his sides,
"Let's just say…we may end up cracking a few shells."
Phew! Okay, I finally was able to get this done!
Before a boatload of craziness happened, preventing me from any access to the computer, I was in the midst of writing the backstory of my O.C. Since everyone else is doing work about life in the academy, I thought I may as well go backwards and tie everything in. It may take awhile before my fanfic line catches up with my chapter "Before the Academy". But anywho here's a small bit of Christina's background story, there will be more to come shortly so I hope you enjoy ^^
